Don’t Let a Piece of Fruit Ruin the Family Holiday

With the Australian summer already upon us it will be school holidays before we know it, meaning many of us will be washing down the RV’s and hitching up the vans for family holidays.

The Aussie holiday wouldn’t be the same without the kids in the back, hassling their parents for a snack and while it’s always a good idea to stay healthy on the road, Australia’s caravanners are being warned not to bring fruit into the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zones this summer.

It is easy to forget what you have on board whilst travelling, this is why caravanners visiting the fruit fly exclusion zones are obliged under law to dispose of any fruit they have.

Murray Valley Citrus Chief Executive, John Tesoriero, said Fruit fly outbreaks have always been the result of infested fruit being brought in from outside the zone.

“With more caravans on the road during the summer holiday period and fruit flies being at their most active in the warmer temperatures, the risk of an outbreak increases substantially,” Mr Tesoriero said.

Mt Tesoriero advised families to buy fruit when they arrived at their destination.

Random roadblocks will be operating throughout the summer and people found in the possession of fruit will face fines of up to $200.
