How many clubs, caravan or otherwise, could boast an attendance of over 400 members at an annual general meeting?

The A’van Club of Australia can – for the third year running!  It recently held its 9th Annual Gathering at Swan Hill in Victoria, where more than 220 A’ vans were assembled.  Because of the numbers, the vans had to be spread over three caravan parks.

The Swan Hill Rural City Council recognised the event as a major event for the city, providing financial support for the gathering.

The program was set up to provide three days of optional activities for all members in attendance; from bike riding, walking, a Sunday market and bush dancing – and, of course, the obligatory AGM.  A new activity for this year’s gathering was a session making model A’vans that actually folded like the real thing.

The attendance figure at the AGM means that nearly 100% of those who attended the three day gathering, also turned up for the meeting!  The attendance figures were no doubt helped along by the lucky door prizes that were given out during the meeting.

The unveiling of the club’s new website, www.avanclubaust.org.au, was another highlight of the gathering.  The site has a public area for those wanting to find out about the club and its activities.  A great deal of interest was generated during the on-site demonstrations of the website.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service was also the beneficiary of $2,218 collected via a raffle.

The 10th gathering of the club will be held in Busselton WA in May 2008.  Preliminary figures from members indicating that they are “very likely” to attend the event, suggest that there will be more than 150 A’vans crossing the Nullarbor next year.  A Sunday afternoon session run by the six WA couples who had come across for this gathering was very well attended with those present very keen to get the low down from the ‘experts’ on crossing the Nullarbor in preparation for next year.
