Off to the doctors again

Post by Cyclone » Thu Apr 27, 2017 3:51 pm

Two years since the kidney and tumor were removed. And now it's that time again for the six monthly checkup. Had the CT done last week. Blood and urine taken on the weekend.
Last November The Doctor told me there was no sign of the cancer but Kidney function was down a bit. He advised me to loose weight and reduce my working hours. So I have been dieting and riding my push bike 15ks nearly every day. Dropped 12 kilos in six months and feel 100% better. Hope the results are better this time.
For those interested we did the Michelle Bridges diet for three months then onto the Jamie Oliver Super Food Family Classics.
I didn't do Michelle Bridges exercise because it was just too inconvenient so I rode my bike instead.

Well done mate fingers crossed for a positive on the tests.

Quick edit.....just had a look at the bridges girl, I really don't want to look like her..... :)
I now have to note that I cannot accept ownership, truth, quality, or veracity, of articles I may quote off the internet.

Ya know Paul, that's probably not gonna happen is it .......
That said, the MB diets and stuff does seem to work, both the wife and daughter did it for about 12mths and were very happy with the results. Biggest issue of course is keeping it off and eating 'smartly' for the rest of ya life.

Sid, keep up the exercise regime and you'll be a winner.
all the best for the report next week.

Yea, well done, it may be hard but it pays to keep trying.

I should be losing some weight, but as you know it's hard to get started until you get a wake-up call.

Thanks for the well wishes.
Back from the Doctors. All good. No sign of the cancer. Still have some spots on the lung. The spots are not growing so they are happy with that. Most likely scar tissue from something else. Kidney filter function has improved. Now 58 up from 48 last visit. Filter function for a young bloke with two Kidneys should be up around 100. A very old man around 48. I should be up around 65. So the advice is keep up the diet and exercise.
I did't know this until today. Apparently people with only one Kidney are prone to putting on weight. And the biggest risk is Diabetes as a consequence.

Excellent news Sid :D

What please is that kidney filter function blood test called? I mean its chemical name.

Re my recently prescribed blood thinner I was asked when I last had a blood test for kidney function. I have all of my blood tests in a spreadsheet and liver function is the main group that I recognise but kidney function hasn't been talked about - till now.

Hi OT,
Sorry for the slow reply.
There are several sets of results that are associated with the Kidney Blood test. My Uroligest said that the one that I need to be concerned about is the gFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate). My age group 60-69 gFR should be around 85. Age 70+ gFR should be around 75.

Thanks Sid, interesting stuff :)

Although my spreadsheet goes back 20 years gFR only first appeared in 2008 when I was 66. The value was a low 65. Next test, 18 months later, it was 80. The highest was 2 years ago at 89 and 3 months ago 79 (age 75). So clearly it moves about a bit. The average of all tests is 80. According to the test results normal range the minimum is 60 and no maximum.

My wife is pretty healthy and planned to donate a kidney to her sister. What stopped her, after many tests, was unexplained poor kidney results. Her gFR in 2006 (age 57) was only 57 and 4 years later was 60. Her 11 year average is 70. The low test results, that have been examined by various specialists, including taking biopsies (all related to the attempted donation) can't be explained by any expert other than that is just how she is
