Torrens Creek to Aramac dirt road

Post by Bussy » Wed Apr 18, 2018 6:40 am

Just wondering is anyone has recently traveled the dirt track between Torrens Creek and Aramac as it looks a more direct route from Torrens Creek down to Barcaldine?
I know its 200 km or so of no blacktop but any feedback would be good.

Most of this road is good sealed bitumen. There is however about 35km of dirt road at the Torrens Creek end.
At the present time (mid April 2018) the dirt road is very rough with lots of corrugations. Very heavy rain and flooding a few weeks ago hasnt helped.
Flinders Shire will get round to grading this section in time, but its not top of their priority list.
Its possible with a van in tow but take your time...
Check the Flinders Shire Council road condition report for current status:- http://www.flinders.qld.gov.au/document ... 4.2018.pdf

Thanks Denno that is really a great help and a good link to very current info.

About to head off that way on Friday from Cairns and will stop off at the Torrens Creek hotel and have a chat with anyone there that has been up or down it recently (last couple of days) as I would like to give it a crack. Just hope there is not too much traffic coming at me to share any tar with my 2.5 metre wide van as I don't want to be forced off onto a slippery shoulder then slide off and get stuck in a ditch. Have no recovery gear with me on this trip.

Be careful who you ask. If a local tells you it is good it can be quite bad, if you ask a caravanner the condition and they say it is bad it could be reasonable. So it depends on what they are used to, I have found that out particularly asking locals.

Be aware the heavies carrying fruit and veg from the tableland have been using this road. The dirt section is mostly quite wide so they shouldn't worry you too much.
Some of the sealed section is narrow, so keep an eye out for oncoming...
