OT, reading through this thread I just tried your test with my Samsung S5.

Initial reading 89.9 degrees (laying on its longer edge)
Spin 180, reading 89.8

I then turned it over on to the opposite longer edge and repeated with the exact same results.

From this it would appear to be reasonably accurate. I did note though that it only reads in positive degrees 0 to 90 irrespective of which side you use or which way you tilt it. Holding it in ‘portrait’ fashion it will show zero degrees when it’s level, but using the short sides is obviously not as accurate.
