Market fresh is the best way to enjoy food. I recently visited the Sydney Fresh Food Markets at Flemington an awful hour on a Saturday morning, but it was worth it. The smell was amazing. There were fruit and vegetables as far as the eye could see (and cheap too!), all sorts of dried herbs, nuts, cheeses, fish, meat, small goods and bread. I came away with a punnet of blueberries that were divine, macadamias that were heavenly and the tastiest loaf of bread I’ve had in ages. You must visit if the markets if you are ever in the region.

Sometimes the nicest meals are ones that aren’t really anything fancy, which is what I found recently on Rottnest Island. I had spent a busy morning cycling all over the beautiful island, covering over 20km, before it came time to sit down for lunch.
I found a café right on the water near the Thomson Bay settlement and ordered a chicken and salad roll. There was nothing especially tasty about the roll and nothing very interesting about its ingredients, but I was starving. With picture-postcard views in front of me and a couple of peacocks wandering around to see if I had any leftovers, it turned out to be a memorable dining experience.

I must say, I really am partial to the ol’ tea and scones about 4pm most afternoons.
You can imagine my delight when after a long day of work I stumbled across GECKO CAFÉ on Oxley St, Bourke. I think I must have sniffed them out from the footpath as they were fresh out of the oven. Mmmmmm!!
Served with cream and homemade jam, I was in heaven.
