I love pasta, but in the warmer months the traditional creamy or tomato sauces are just too heavy. For a summery twist on one of my favourite foods I leave out the thick sauces and go natural – almost. A squeeze of lemon and a dash of olive oil sprinkled over some pasta is lovely. And for some extra flavour add some rocket, asparagus and flakes of smoked salmon to the pasta. It is super tasty, and not too bad on the hips.

On the road in Adelaide recently, I had to hunt down some breakfast. C&M photographer Paul Worsley and I decided to stop in at a small café on South Rd. There we both tucked into the biggest bacon and egg rolls this side of anywhere. They were on long crusty bread rolls with stacks of bacon, a few eggs and plenty of BBQ sauce. Mine was mouth-wateringly good, but once I’d polished it off I was completely stuffed. I didn’t need to eat again until dinner that night.

Being a vegetarian, I found myself at Parker’s Pies in Rutherglen, Victoria, completely by accident. Although, these are more than your average pies, with emu, kangaroo, and seafood pies on the menu. This pie shop has won more pie competitions than you can poke a stick at. It’s defiantly worth the small hike off the Hume Highway.
