While you’re on the road there are a stack of chores and other tasks that, if done regularly, can prevent nasty incidents occurring and ruining your holiday. These chores take the form of daily checklists to make sure your rig is ready to depart a campsite, and regular maintenance of both van and vehicle.
Daily Departure Chores
- Ensure van and vehicle are securely coupled. Remember to attach safety chains
- Check brake lights and indicators
- Make sure all gas cylinders have been turned off
- Stow TV antenna
- Shut all windows and hatches
- Securely shut fridge and cupboard doors
- Stow step away
- Secure pop-top
- Shut and secure van door
- Roll up and stow power lead
- Roll up awning and lock in place
- Secure corner stabilisers
- Stow waste-water hoses
- Check jockey wheel has been removed from A-frame
- Ensure van handbrake has been released
It’s also a good idea to drive a few metres away from your site, and then hop out of your car to check that everything is still secure and that you haven’t left anything behind.
Regular Maintenance
- Check wheel bearings on van tyres. Also keep an eye out for tyre wear and tear and maintain correct tyre pressure
- Check water hoses and connections for leaks, cleanliness
- Make sure the jockey wheel is well lubricated
- Ensure gas cylinders remain in date and that gas connections are secure
- Give van a wash occasionally to look after paintwork
- Check exterior (including roof) for signs of any cracks or holes. Check inside for any signs of water damage
- Check oil and coolant levels
- Check vehicle tyre pressure regularly
- Test brakes often. Also check brake and clutch fluid levels
Finally, get your car serviced regularly to make sure it’s in tip-top condition to take you around the country.
