Six Sacred Stones by Matthew Reilly

I adore Matthew Reilly’s fiction. And when I read his most recent release, Six Sacred Stones, I didn’t stop for a breath the entire book. Until I got to the end and was ready to throttle Mr Reilly! (Once you’ve read it, you’ll understand.)

Six Sacred Stones is the sequel to Seven Ancient Wonders, which was published a couple of years ago. Part two is brilliant, and perhaps my favourite yet. The pair of books are certainly incredible.

Reilly has written a handful of other fast-paced, well-thought out action novels, with excellent characters. He has an amazing ability to make you read a book in one sitting. Which is why he is one of my favourite authors. Better yet, he is Aussie. A home grown Sydney writer, with a definite talent.

Blood Memory by Greg Iles

Greg Iles has written a couple of other crime books that I’ve found quite enjoyable, so I was keen to get stuck into Blood Memory. The plot centres around forensic odontologist Cat Ferry – an expert in bite marks called in to help the Police with a gruesome murder in New Orleans. But Cat also has a host of personal problems that stem from a traumatic event in her past.

This is a fairly long book, but it managed to maintain my interest for most of its length. The plot takes a few corkscrew twists along the way top keep you guessing.

Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives by Margaret Carroll

This book is a compilation of short stories of Australian people, doing interesting and extraordinary things in rural Australia. The people’s inspiring lives do grab your attention, but are sometimes not told very well. This is a bit of a shame because I think it is a fantastic idea for a book. Some of the better stories tell of an Aboriginal health worker, innovative farming in the outback and nurses working with leprosy in the Top End. I found it quite hard to get to the end.
