Greg Smith - Editor

My passion for the bush goes way back to when I was a kid, for which I blame the likes of Henry Lawson, CJ Dennis ..and my dad, who was a kind of a poet too, and told me yarns about when he and his brothers grew up in the bush.

When our kids came along we stored the tent and discovered on-site vans, and ultimately bought our own, a Viscount pop-top with pull out ends. The kids still reckon they were the best holidays we ever had.

Over the past 35-odd years the vans and camping gear may have got fancier, but the thing my wife and I keep re-discovering is that camping is a great equalizer. When you’re invited to sit down at a campfire you can never tell if the person opposite is a lawyer, a teacher, a plumber, a battler or a millionaire, and frankly, nobody really cares. It’s all about meeting new people with different ideas and ideals. Some of our closest friends today are people we bumped into on the track. Some of you might even recognize us from previous encounters, if you do drop us a line, and I hope to meet a heap more of you in my travels with C&M.

I’ll look for you on the track!

This is a really exciting time for me; I’ve been a reader for years, and it’s a real privilege to be given the opportunity to contribute to such a great mag.

I’ve been a camper and traveler for a little while now.  Mum and Dad hit the road with me when I was two and I have kept going ever since (and so have they, currently in a Geist).  I’ve been fortunate enough to see a lot of the world, but it’s the soils of Australia that my travelling boots fancy a kiss from these days.  I’m up for anything - my philosophy is if it moves, it tours; if it has stopped moving, it’s edible!

I recently completed a 1000km tour on a little 160cc scooter, riding and camping along the Princes Highway from Melbourne to Wollongong.  I stayed in amazing places like Wilson’s Promontory and Jervis Bay, and even the persistent rain couldn’t veil the beauty bursting from the landscape.

I’m busting to hit the road again for Caravan & Motorhome.  They think they’re paying me to work; I think they’re paying me to do what I love.

I can’t wait to see you all out there!

Jamie Cleary - Photographer

I first began shooting action sports, including motorsport, rodeos and show jumping.  Now that I’m shooting for Caravan and Motorhome magazine, as well 4WD Action,  I have been able to combine my career in photography with my interest in the Australian bush and motorsport.

I’m living in a big rural block on the outskirts of Sydney, and when not out shooting for C & M I can enjoy a picturesque sunset from the back verandah.

I love travelling. A couple of years ago I took off and backpacked around Europe for four months. Now, how lucky am I … I’ll be travelling around Australia for C&M discovering all the unique places our beautiful country has to offer, and I can’t wait to tell you all about them.

As well as travelling, I enjoy a good book, good food, and meeting new people. I love nothing more than going to the beach, packing a picnic, cycling, and bushwalking.

I am only relatively new to camping, compared to these old hands.  My first experience involved blood sucking leeches, a clash with cow pats, and a lot of rain- and I revelled in every moment (especially eating toasted marshmallows by the fire).  Even while I was packing up my tent, I couldn’t wait for my next camping adventure.

I look forward to hearing your stories, and telling you some of my own.

See you on the road.
